5 Reasons to Invest in a Waxed Cotton Jacket
There are many reasons that people choose to invest in a waxed cotton jacket. It is strong, durable and classic and
I have loved working with the fabric since the first time I used it.
Read on to find out the 5 reasons that I think it is great...
IT IS WEATHERPROOF
Waxed cotton is well known for its extremely water resistant nature.
The concept of waxed cotton was originally developed in the 15
th
century
and has developed throughout the centuries and more importantly stood the test of time as a quality, functional, long lasting coat and jacket fabric.
(All of the waxed cotton I use comes from Halley Stevensons Mill, in Dundee.
Halleys have over 150 years of experience dying and waterproofing textiles and has been manufacturing textiles since 1864 when it began its life as a jute mill!)
IT IS EASY TO CARE FOR
Due to the nature of the fabric, folds, marks and scuffs actually, add to the character of the coat rather than taking anything away (my partner Dale still wears one to work every day that I made for him almost 5 years ago).
The fabric ages well.
Over time you will need to re-wax your jacket, which can be done easily by buying some of the Halley Stevensons specialist products
.
(You will need the waxed tin for the traditionally waxed coats and the spray bottle for the 'dry' waxed jackets)
One thing to note is that you should never machine wash your waxed jacket.
THEY ARE MADE TO LAST
Waxed cotton jackets can outlast many other items in your wardrobe and the more you use it the better it looks.
Treat it well and you will be wearing it for many years to come!
QUALITY CRAFTMANSHIP
Each coat is hand cut and made with quality inner fabrics and finishing details to match.
You can see the full range of coats
and you have the options of ‘custom works’, which you can find out more about
.
YOU CAN PICK A COLOUR AND WEIGHT THAT SUITS YOU!
I have two different weights and finishes to choose from;
A traditional waxed cotton fabric which looks like this...

Or the Hybrid ‘Dry’ Waxed cotton fabric which looks like this –
I have deliberately chosen a similar colour to show off these coats so you can compare - the differences will be more noticeable when seen up close.
Most importantly
both
fabrics have
the same waterproof qualities
, the main difference you will notice is the weight.
The traditional waxed jackets feel a lot heavier in weight and have a more 'waxy' texture. Both are suitable for year-round wear (speaking from the UK here!), layer up over winter and just wear alone over a top in the warmer months.
