5 Ways to Love Your Clothes Longe

There is a lot of noise out there about sustainable fashion, but let’s be honest, the best way we can reduce our impact and love our clothes longer is by looking after them properly! So here are my top 5 tips to help you make your clothes last.

READ THE LABEL

When you are buying a new garment, read the care advice on the website or on the garment label. Usually, it will let you know how to wash an item and offer any other specific advice related to garment care. This is important as certain garments can be ruined with one wrong wash - I can think of a few items I have shrunk in the past and for my own designs putting one of my waxed cotton coats in the wash is a big no-no.

USE THE CARE PRODUCTS

I am sure we are all guilty of ruining a garment because we haven’t used the recommended care products. Suede springs to mind for me! Usually, you can buy care products for under £10 and the cost is little given the lifespan it will help to add to your garments. Sometimes it might even be multi-purpose and you can use it on lots of your items or shoes.

MEND & REPAIR

No garment is immune to wear and tear no matter how well it’s made. Think about how you might be able to extend the life of a garment by repairing it yourself or if you don’t know how then take it to a local repair/alterations shop to see what they can do.

DON’T OVERWASH

You don’t have to wash a garment after every wear. Most garments wear much better the less they are washed, knitwear is a good example as well as denim. The impact of washing a garment can be big too, so help save the planet by washing less and washing on a cooler cycle!

BUY BETTER

Buy better when you can, this ensures the garment stays around longer and less waste goes to landfill. Now, this doesn’t mean you have to buy new, there is lots of quality vintage around as well as buying second hand. Generally, you can pick up something better buying second hand than the cost of a new fast fashion garment. I always find when you do invest or buy something you truly love rather than a quick fast fashion fix, you tend to look after it better anyway!
